AppWriter English arrives on the App Store in all English speaking countries

Revolutionary assistive application for the iPad

COPENHAGEN, Denmark―April 23, 2012―LingApps today announced that AppWriter, the first text editor for the new iPad to level the playing field for millions of students worldwide, will be available in all English speaking countries on April 23, 2012.

AppWriter is packed with incredible assistive features. All tools and features are seamlessly integrated and comprise context based word suggestions, text-to-speech, OCR and the special Dyslexie-font. There is no need for Wifi or 3G access. Everything is embedded and runs directly on the iPad. “We want to make life easier for all iPad users with reading and writing disabilities. Achieving maximum independence is the ultimate goal for many of these users, and AppWriter will assist them in reaching that goal, “ says Stefan Pal, CEO of LingApps. “We were waiting on the new iPad and the improved camera. Up until now, anyone with reading and writing disabilites had to have a portable scanner, a heavy laptop and a bunch of assistive software. With the new iPad and AppWriter, you now have an all-in-one assistive technology tool,” he further says.

High quality synthetic voices ensure a great user experience. All menus and buttons can be read aloud, and different reading strategies cover many of the typical use cases. Visual tools even highlight the text as it is being read aloud. “We are extremely proud to be providing the world’s most natural-sounding Text-to-Speech voices for this ground-breaking assistive tool for the iPad,” explained Lukasz Osowski, CEO of IVONA Software.

AppWriter contains a word prediction feature. Word prediction enables you to develop your writing skills by providing the tools to construct sentences with ease. AppWriter predicts the word you want to use next. This means that you will be less likely to make grammatical or spelling errors. Word prediction is available with the ability to hear each word before selection.

The powerful Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology in AppWriter means that any paper document or image becomes accessible. Through the integration of Mobile OCRKit, textbooks, photocopies and handouts are easily converted into text documents on the new iPad. The text can be spoken out loud with color highlighting or edited.

The Dyslexie font is another great feature in AppWriter. The specific characteristics of the Dyslexie font make it easier for people with dyslexia to distinguish the individual letters. This reduces the number of reading errors as well as the effort it takes to read the text. “People with reading disabilities understand the importance of reading, because they don’t take reading for granted. AppWriter helps these people and enables them to participate in today’s information based society”, says Christian Boer, creator of the typeface Dyslexie.

AppWriter comes with British English word prediction and British and Australian English voices.
